Awana News - Spring 2004ACT's intrepid field and liaison officer Maaka McCandless has been honoured for his keen conservation work on Great Barrier Island.
The Department of Conservation has awarded Maaka a community conservation certificate that recognizes his voluntary conservation efforts. DoC's Great Barrier area manager Dale Tawa says the award is the first of its kind to be given out by DoC's Auckland Conservancy which covers the island. "It basically recognizes all of the good conservation work that Maaka has done over and above the work he does for the Awana Catchment Trust." Tawa says Maaka's sterling efforts include educating people about the dangers that dogs can pose to threatened wildlife and sharing rat trapping information with DoC and other island networks. "The information he has shared about his rat trapping programme at Awana has given us some useful ideas about our own programme." Maaka was one of several conservationists to receive the DoC award at a ceremony in Mangere this year. |
