Ferns

More than half of New Zealand's native fern species grow on Great Barrier Island.

These include tree ferns such as the black fern tree or Mamaku (Cyathea medullaris) and the short tree fern (Dicksonia lanata).

Other smaller ferns such as Blechnum norfolkianum and Pteris comans grow only on islands within the Great Barrier group, such as Mayor Island and Rakitu Island.

ACT has continued to remove feral predators and monitor wildlife in
the Awana area on
Great Barrier Island.

These days you're only likely to spot the Brown Teal in parts of Auckland and Northland. And
Great Barrier Island is
the only place where
their numbers are
not declining!
