Conifers

New Zealand's famous kauri (Agathis Australis), which grows along the banks of the Awana River and on the slopes of Mt Hobson (Mt Hirakimata), is the catchment's largest conifer.

The Mt Hobson Kauri trees were some of the few spared from logging during the early 1900s which almost wiped out the species on Great Barrier.

Seeds from the surviving trees have blown right across the island and now new stands of Kauri are appearing.

Other conifers growing in the Awana valley include Rimu (Dacrydium cupressinum), Kahikatea (Dacrycarpus dacrydiodes), Totara (Podocarpus totara), Matai (Prumnopitys taxiflora) and Miro (Prumnopitus ferruginea).

ACT has continued to remove feral predators and monitor wildlife in
the Awana area on
Great Barrier Island.

These days you're only likely to spot the Brown Teal in parts of Auckland and Northland. And
Great Barrier Island is
the only place where
their numbers are
not declining!
