Northern NZ Dotterel

The northern New Zealand dotterel is an endemic, endangered species. That means these shorebirds are only found in the NZ wild and there are not many of them left!

New Zealand also has a southern dotterel that's found only on Stewart Island where it nests on the ground on mountain tops. Southern dotterels are so rare - there are about 60 compared with about 1300 northern dotterels - that DoC employs people especially to look after them.

their numbers are
not declining!
